More Than a Game: The Story of Tab Recreation

For more than 100 years, Tab Recreation has been a cornerstone of youth sports in Indianapolis and its story has never been just about sports. It is a story of faith in action. A story of community built over generations. A story of belonging.

From its earliest days, Tab Recreation was created with a purpose that went beyond the game. Rooted in the mission of Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, it began as a way to bring young people together in a safe, structured, and encouraging environment. What emerged was something far more meaningful. A place where kids could grow not only as athletes, but as individuals shaped by mentorship, consistency, and care. Long before travel teams and year-round competition became the norm, Tab Recreation offered something different. It provided a space where relationships mattered more than results, where coaches served as role models, and where every child, regardless of skill level, was given the opportunity to participate, improve, and feel valued.

Generations of families have passed through Tab’s fields and gyms. Parents who once played here now return with their own children. Stories are shared across decades of first games, lasting friendships, influential coaches, and moments that shaped confidence and character. These experiences are the foundation of what makes Tab Recreation more than a program. They make it a community.

At its core, Tab Recreation has always reflected a deeper belief: that every person is created with purpose and worth. That belief has shaped the way programs are designed, the way coaches lead, and the way families are welcomed. Faith is not something separate from the experience, but rather, it is woven into it through service, encouragement, accountability, and love.

As youth sports have evolved, so has Tab Recreation. Today, it offers a wide range of programs including soccer, flag football, tackle football, basketball, cheer, and enrichment opportunities, serving close to two thousand youth and over one thousand families each year. While the offerings have grown, the mission has remained steady: Tab Rec is a Christ-centered community that prioritizes belonging and movement for all youth, adults, families, and neighbors through inclusive recreational programming that develops character, confidence, and connection.

In a landscape where youth sports can often feel overly competitive, expensive, and exclusive, Tab Recreation continues to stand apart. It exists to make sports accessible. To develop the whole child. To create an environment where kids can learn, grow, and simply enjoy being part of something positive.

Because at Tab Recreation, success is defined differently. It’s found in the child who gains confidence. In the coach who shows up week after week. In the teammate who learns to encourage others. In the family that finds community. And in the quiet, consistent ways faith is lived out every day.

As Tab Recreation looks ahead with continued growth, expanded programming, and the future home of basketball at the new Oaks Fieldhouse, it remains grounded in the same vision that started it all: a place where youth, families, and neighbors can come together, belong fully, and grow through movement and connection.

This is Tab Recreation. More than a game. A legacy of faith, community, and opportunity.
