More Than a Game: The Story of Tab Recreation

For more than 100 years, Tab Recreation has been a cornerstone of youth sports in Indianapolis and its story has never been just about sports. It is a story of faith in action. A story of community built over generations. A story of belonging.

From its earliest days, Tab Recreation was created with a purpose that went beyond the game. Rooted in the mission of Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, it began as a way to bring young people together in a safe, structured, and encouraging environment. What emerged was something far more meaningful. A place where kids could grow not only as athletes, but as individuals shaped by mentorship, consistency, and care. Long before travel teams and year-round competition became the norm, Tab Recreation offered something different. It provided a space where relationships mattered more than results, where coaches served as role models, and where every child, regardless of skill level, was given the opportunity to participate, improve, and feel valued.

Generations of families have passed through Tab’s fields and gyms. Parents who once played here now return with their own children. Stories are shared across decades of first games, lasting friendships, influential coaches, and moments that shaped confidence and character. These experiences are the foundation of what makes Tab Recreation more than a program. They make it a community.

At its core, Tab Recreation has always reflected a deeper belief: that every person is created with purpose and worth. That belief has shaped the way programs are designed, the way coaches lead, and the way families are welcomed. Faith is not something separate from the experience, but rather, it is woven into it through service, encouragement, accountability, and love.

As youth sports have evolved, so has Tab Recreation. Today, it offers a wide range of programs including soccer, flag football, basketball, cheer, and enrichment opportunities, serving over a thousand youth and nearly two thousand families each year. While the offerings have grown, the mission has remained steady: Tab Rec is a Christ-centered community that prioritizes belonging and movement for all youth, adults, families, and neighbors through inclusive recreational programming that develops character, confidence, and connection.

In a landscape where youth sports can often feel overly competitive, expensive, and exclusive, Tab Recreation continues to stand apart. It exists to make sports accessible. To develop the whole child. To create an environment where kids can learn, grow, and simply enjoy being part of something positive.

Because at Tab Recreation, success is defined differently. It’s found in the child who gains confidence. In the coach who shows up week after week. In the teammate who learns to encourage others. In the family that finds community. And in the quiet, consistent ways faith is lived out every day.

As Tab Recreation looks ahead with continued growth, expanded programming, and the future home of basketball at the new Oaks Fieldhouse, it remains grounded in the same vision that started it all: a place where youth, families, and neighbors can come together, belong fully, and grow through movement and connection.

This is Tab Recreation. More than a game. A legacy of faith, community, and opportunity.

A New Home for Belonging and Movement: The Oaks Fieldhouse

The Oaks Fieldhouse opens Fall 2026, offering youth sports & community programs. Join us for a welcoming space focused on movement & belonging.

There are so many good reasons to communicate with site visitors. Tell them about sales and new products or update them with tips and information.

There are moments when a building is more than just a building. Moments when it represents something bigger...something lasting. The new Fieldhouse at The Oaks Academy is one of those moments.

Set to open in Fall 2026, this space will feature three full basketball courts and an elevated indoor track. On paper, it’s a state-of-the-art athletic facility. But for the families, kids, and community organizations it will serve, it represents something much deeper:

          Access. Opportunity. Belonging.

For years, one of the biggest challenges in youth sports, especially in our community, has been access to consistent, high-quality indoor space. Practices get squeezed. Schedules shift. Opportunities are limited, not by effort or passion, but by availability. The Oaks Fieldhouse changes that. This facility creates room to grow—literally and figuratively. It opens the door for more teams, more practices, more games, and more moments that matter. It allows organizations like Tab Recreation to operate with consistency, structure, and vision. And that changes everything.

Through our partnership with The Oaks Academy, Tab Recreation will have the opportunity to call this Fieldhouse home for basketball and expanded programming. This means A consistent, reliable space for leagues and practices, The ability to grow participation and welcome more families, A better experience for players, coaches, and parents, and the opportunity to host events, tournaments, and community gatherings at a higher level. But beyond operations, this space allows us to be more intentional in how we serve.

At Tab Recreation, we believe sports are a vehicle, not the destination. They are a way to build confidence, teach discipline, create connection, and show every child that they belong. This Fieldhouse gives us the environment to do that even better.

The impact of this facility won’t stop at the baseline or the sideline.

          For kids,

it means a safe, structured place to grow on and off the court.

          For families,

it means a consistent, welcoming environment to gather and connect.

          For the community,

it means a shared space that brings people together across neighborhoods, backgrounds, and experiences. The elevated track alone opens new doors inviting adults, seniors, and families into a space designed not just for competition, but for movement and health at every stage of life. This is how communities are strengthened. Not just through programs, but through places that invite people in.

At its core, the Oaks Fieldhouse is an investment in people. It’s a commitment to the idea that every child deserves access to quality spaces, strong mentorship, and opportunities to grow. It’s a step toward closing gaps that have existed for far too long. And it’s a foundation for what’s next. For Tab Recreation, it represents the future. A future where we continue to expand our reach, deepen our impact, and stay rooted in what matters most:

          Belonging and Movement.

The doors may not open until Fall 2026, but the impact is already being built. Whether you’re a parent, coach, volunteer, or community partner, there’s a place for you in what’s ahead. Because this isn’t just a new facility. It’s a new chapter.

Why Community Matters More Than Competition

Learn why community is vital in youth sports. Join us to foster a supportive environment that builds confidence and teamwork.

In today’s youth sports landscape, it’s easy to believe that competition is everything. Scores are tracked. Rankings are posted. Highlights are shared. And for many families, it can feel like the value of the experience is tied directly to wins and losses. But the truth is, what kids need most from sports isn’t more pressure to perform. They need community.

At its best, youth sports should be a place where kids feel safe, supported, and connected. A place where they are known by name, encouraged through challenges, and surrounded by people who care about them beyond the scoreboard. Because long after the final whistle blows, it’s not the score that stays with them, it’s the experience.

It’s the coach who believed in them. The teammate who encouraged them. The moment they felt like they truly belonged. That’s the power of community.

Competition Isn’t the Problem. But It Shouldn’t Be the Priority. Competition has value. It teaches resilience, discipline, and how to handle both success and failure. But when competition becomes the primary focus, something important gets lost. Kids begin to associate their worth with performance. Playing time becomes political. Mistakes feel heavier than they should. And instead of enjoying the game, kids begin to carry the weight of expectations that were never meant for them.

Community shifts that focus. It reminds kids that they are more than their stats. That their value isn’t tied to how many points they score or how many games they win. It creates an environment where growth matters more than perfection and effort matters more than outcome.

Community isn’t just a word...it’s something you can feel. It's coaches who take time to teach, not just direct. It's teammates who celebrate each other’s success and parents who encourage every child, not just their own. And it's programs that prioritize inclusion over exclusivity. It’s the difference between showing up to play and showing up to belong.

In strong community environments, kids are more likely to stay engaged, try new things, and develop confidence. They take risks without fear of failure. They build relationships that extend beyond the field or court. And most importantly, they begin to understand what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves.

Ironically, when community is prioritized, performance often improves.

          When kids feel supported:

           They play more freely

           They take constructive feedback better

           They develop confidence faster

           They stay in sports longer

Instead of playing not to lose, they play to grow. And that’s where real development happens. Creating a strong community doesn’t happen by accident, it’s built intentionally.

          For parents, it means:

           Encouraging effort over outcome

Supporting all players, not just your child

Modeling respect for coaches, officials, and teammates

          For coaches, it means:

           Teaching with patience and purpose

           Building relationships, not just lineups

Creating space for every player to contribute

When both come together, the result is powerful: a culture where kids feel valued, supported, and motivated to keep showing up.

At the end of the day, wins and losses will always be part of sports. But they shouldn’t define the experience.

          Success should look like:

Kids who are excited to come to practice

           Players who support one another

           Families who feel connected

A community that continues to grow stronger each season

Because the goal isn’t just to develop athletes.

It’s to develop confident, connected, and resilient young people.

In a world where kids are constantly evaluated, compared, and pushed to perform, community offers something different. It offers stability. It offers encouragement. It offers belonging. And those things matter far beyond the game.

Competition will always be part of sports. But community is what makes it meaningful. Because when kids feel like they belong, confidence, growth, and even performance tend to follow.
